Pruntytown inmate sues over kitchen burn injury

Pruntytown Correctional Center

CHARLESTON - An inmate at Pruntytown Correctional Center has filed a suit against the center, its warden and the state Division of Corrections after she was burned while cleaning an oven in the kitchen.

Attorney Ira M. Haught filed a suit Feb. 15 in Kanawha Circuit Court against the West Virginia Division of Corrections, Pruntytown, Warden James Ielapi and John Doe.

According to the suit, Goff worked as a member of the kitchen staff while at Pruntytown in May 2006. During that time she was told to clean the oven.

Goff claims she told her supervisor she did not know how to clean the oven, nor was she instructed on how to clean it. According to the suit, Goff was only supplied with a pair of medical gloves.

While cleaning the oven Goff claims she suffered burns to both of her arms and received treatment. However, according to the suit, the burns were improperly cared for and became infected.

Goff claims the burns have scarred her for life and that she is still in pain, even though the burns have healed.

In the four-count suit, Goff claims she suffered severe humiliation and embarrassment, loss of enjoyment of life, fear, mental injury, emotional pain, future medical treatment, and other injuries. She seeks compensatory and punitive damages.

Attorney Ira M. Haught is representing Goff. The case has been assigned to Judge Louis Bloom.
