Putnam man names 31 companies in asbestos suit

CHARLESTON - A Putnam County man has filed a suit against 31 companies, claiming he suffered from asbestos exposure while working for Union Carbide.

George Shawver filed the suit April 11 in Kanawha Circuit Court against Union Carbide and 30 other companies. His wife, Betty Shawver, is also named as a plaintiff.

According to the suit, Shawver worked as a laborer and operator at Union Carbide from 1946-87. He claims he was unaware of the dangers from exposure to asbestos, and now suffers from mesothelioma.

Shawver claims the defendants failed to inform Shawver of the dangers of the deadly mineral. He claims they also failed to protect the employees from the dusts.

Betty Shawver claims she will be required to render nursing services beyond that expected of a spouse.

In the 12-count suit, George and Betty Shawver seek compensatory and punitive damages.

Attorney William K. Schwartz is representing the Shawvers. The case will be assigned to a visiting judge.
