State DOT wants $1 million from Ky. firm for destroyed bridge

CHARLESTON - The state Department of Transportation is seeking $1 million from a Kentucky transport company, claiming a company truck collided into and destroyed a state bridge.

Paul Mattox Jr., commissioner of the WVDOT, filed the suit Aug. 7 in Kanawha Circuit Court, against Lewis Transport Inc. and John A. Harris.

According to the suit, Candace Williams, now deceased, was the driver of a 2000 semi-tractor. On Sept. 3, 2006, Williams was driving the truck on W.Va. 18 in Middlebourne. She lost control and struck the McAbee Crossing Bridge, destroying it, the suit says.

The WVDOT claims it suffered damages in excess of $1 million. In the two-count suit, Mattox and the DOT seek $1 million plus interest, attorney fess and other relief to cover their damages.

Attorney Richard L. Earless is representing the DOT. The case has been assigned to Judge Jennifer Bailey Walker.
