CHARLESTON - A South Carolina man has filed a medical malpractice suit against a Kanawha County physician on behalf of one of his family members who died after taking prescription drugs prescribed to her by the doctor.
Edward G. O'Neill filed the suit Sept. 18 in Kanawha Circuit Court on behalf of the estate of Deborah Ann O'Neill. The suit is against Iraj Derakhshan, a medical doctor who is licensed to practice psychiatry and neurology in Kanawha County.
According to the suit, Deborah Ann O'Neill was a patient of Derakhshan's from April 2007 until her death on Oct. 17, 2007.
Edward O'Neill claims Derakhshan is to blame for Deborah O'Neill's death because he prescribed her controlled substances on multiple occasions without examining her.
Edward O'Neill claims the family, distributes and beneficiaries of Deborah O'Neill have suffered great mental pain and anguish, loss of services, society, guidance and companionship of the deceased.
O'Neill seeks compensatory and punitive damages.
Derakhshan has filed a response to the suit, denying all the allegations that he, in any way, contributed to the death of Deborah O'Neill.
