CHARLESTON - A Webster County man has filed a suit on behalf of a woman who died after she developed an infection while hospitalized.
Kevin Hamrick filed the suit Sept. 29 in Kanawha Circuit Court, against Select Specialty Hospital – Charleston, on behalf of Ella Hamrick, who entered the facility as a patient July 1, 2006.
Physicians Asif Rahman, William Sale III and Emad Kowatli are also named as defendants.
According to the suit, Ella Hamrick suffered a broken leg July 1, 2006, and underwent surgery to repair a bilateral femur fracture at Charleston Area Medical Center.
Ella Hamrick lived alone and was active prior to the injury, the suit says.
On July 9, 2006, Hamrick developed an infection from a right femoral IV delivering Dopamine. According to the suit, the infiltration went unnoticed until July 10-11.
Hamrick developed sepsis, a decubitis ulceration and necrosis of the area of the infiltrate, the suit says.
On Sept. 7, 2006, Hamrick died.
According to the suit, the defendants failed to properly diagnose and treat the infiltration and diagnose and treat Ella Hamrick for her injuries.
Kevin Hamrick claims the inactions of the defendants led to a long and debilitating hospital course and ultimately caused or substantially contributed to the death of Ella Hamrick.
He seeks compensatory and punitive damages for the estate of Ella Hamrick.
Attorney Richard D. Lindsay is representing Hamrick. The case has been assigned to Judge Irene Berger.
