Couple sues over loose water meter cover

CHARLESTON – A Kanawha County couple is suing a major water company, saying a loose water meter cover caused serious injuries to the woman.

Janet and Charles Farren filed a lawsuit April 3 in Kanawha Circuit Court against West Virginia-American Water Company.

The Farrens claim that a worker for the company came to the Campbells Creek area of the county on Aug. 27, 2008 to remove a water meter because the company was shutting off service to a customer.

The plaintiffs say the worker then failed to secure the latch and tighten the lid.

Two days later, Janet stepped on the lid and fell to the ground, the complaint says. She claims she fractured her right arm in two places and severely injured her right leg.

The couple is seeking compensatory damages over the injury and Charles' loss of consortium.

Harvey D. Peyton is representing the plaintiffs. The case is pending before Kanawha Circuit Judge Charles King.
