Law firm seeks payment related to state bonds

CHARLESTON – A Charleston law firm is suing two companies operating in Bluefield, saying they owe for work the firm did related to state economic development bonds.

Bowles Rice McDavid Graff and Love filed a lawsuit April 24 in Kanawha Circuit Court against M&M Kids and Gemark Services.

The firm says it served as bond counsel for the state Economic Development Authority.

On July 11, 2001, the state issued $4.6 million worth of variable rate demand industrial development revenue bonds to the defendants to start a business where they recover silver from the photography process.

According to the complaint, the defendants still owe $14,500 for the legal services the firm did for the state on the issuance of the bonds.

The plaintiff firm says it has made repeated demands for the money, but no payment has been offered.

The firm wants the money plus interest and legal costs.

Edward D. McDevitt is representing the firm. The case is before Kanawha Circuit Judge Irene Berger.
