Family court judges conference wraps up

VIENNA -- The state's family court judges wrapped up their spring educational conference earlier this week at the Grand Point Conference and Reception Center in Vienna, according to the Parkersburg News and Sentinel.

"We go over educational topics to keep us fresh on new laws and new case law that may have come up for the judges in the area of family law," Fourth District Family Judge Darren Tallman told the newspaper.

Among the topics reviewed at the conference were guardianship rules and domestic violence.

According to the newspaper, the conference had special significance since 21 of the state's 45 family court judges are newly elected.

"Education is a very important facet of being a family court judge," state Supreme Court Chief Justice Brent Benjamin said prior to opening the conference.

"Family court law, in this state, is one of the fastest growing areas. It's an area that affects West Virginians on a day-to-day basis and our family court judges are right out there on the front line. I'm here to show my support and help in any way I can."
