Goodwin
MORGANTOWN – Stephen P. Goodwin, the former chairman of the West Virginia University Board of Governors, has joined Dinsmore & Shohl.
Goodwin, who previously was with the firms of Goodwin & Goodwin and Goodwin & Ware, joined the firm at the end of July. He joins the firm as a partner in the Litigation Department, working from the Morgantown office.
"I was at Goodwin & Goodwin for 30 years," he said. "I came up here (Morgantown) with every intention of taking it easy, slowing it down, taking a few things now and then. But I don't slow down well.
"I tried slowing down. That isn't a good plan for me. I don't have too many hobbies. I like work. I like staying busy."
Thomas Rubenstein, managing partner of the firm's Morgantown office, said Goodwin's arrival is significant for the firm and his office.
"Bringing in a partner of Steve's expertise and renown provides an exciting opportunity for the continued growth of this office and magnifies our firm's statewide presence in a dramatic way," Rubenstein said. "I am personally looking forward to practicing with Steve and welcoming him into the Dinsmore & Shohl family."
Goodwin said he's excited about the new challenge.
"I was used to doing things for a long time," he said. "This opportunity presented itself, and I decided to jump into it. I am excited. I am re-energized."
He also likes the idea of working with a larger firm.
"Henry Jernigan (the firm's Managing Partner for West Virginia) has put together 60-plus quality lawyers," Goodwin said. "And there are 400-plus lawyers in all the offices. It's kind of fun.
"I'm sure they'll have to be patient with me to get adjusted to working with a bigger firm. It's a system of doing business I've never worked in."
Goodwin is completing his second and final term as a member of the WVU Board of Governors. He also served as the 100th president of the WVU Alumni Association Board of Directors.
"The WVU Board has been great," he said. "There have been moments, both good and bad. But I love WVU. I love being in service to it."
Goodwin has practiced law for more than 35 years and brings extensive experience in the area of litigation with an emphasis on insurance defense, toxic torts, and government relations to the firm. Goodwin earned his J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law and his B.S. from West Virginia University.
