Goodwin resigns from WVU Board

Goodwin

MORGANTOWN -- Charleston attorney Steve Goodwin is stepping down after seven years on West Virginia University's Board of Governors.

He resigned in a letter to Gov. Joe Manchin, but he didn't say why he was leaving before his term ends June 30, 2010.

Goodwin was first appointed to the WVU board in 2002 by Gov. Bob Wise, then reappointed by Manchin and elected chairman in 2006.

Earlier this year, Goodwin joined the law firm of Dinsmore & Shohl. He joined the firm as a partner in the Litigation Department, working from the Morgantown office.

"The WVU Board has been great," Goodwin told The Record in August. "There have been moments, both good and bad. But I love WVU. I love being in service to it."

Goodwin has practiced law for more than 35 years and brings extensive experience in the area of litigation with an emphasis on insurance defense, toxic torts, and government relations to the firm. Goodwin earned his J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law and his B.S. from West Virginia University.

Current WVU Board of Governors Chairwoman Carolyn Long praised Goodwin's service.

"Steve Goodwin has been a valuable member of the WVU Board of Governors over the years," she said. "He has served faithfully since his appointment in 2002 and his reappointment in 2006, and the Board had many successes during those years. I personally appreciate his friendship and counsel and wish him well with his very busy law practice and other interests."

WVU President James P. Clements also praised Goodwin.

"I've enjoyed working with and getting to know Board of Governors member Steve Goodwin since my appointment as president," he said. "I know he has been very generous with his time and energy over the past seven years as the past chair and an active member of this Board, and I wish him the very best in his future plans. I know Steve loves this University and will continue to help us in the future."

Manchin also commended Goodwin.

"Steve Goodwin has given much of his time and energy to WVU as a Board of Governors member for more than seven years," Manchin said. "I applaud his steadfast commitment to promoting this institution; he has truly made a positive impact as a member and as former chairman.

"Steve leaves the board with a legacy of dedication and with a willingness to bring people together to move WVU forward. He was a true asset to the board and I sincerely appreciate his service. I wish him only the best of luck."
