Woman sues Charleston cardiologist for husband's death

CHARLESTON -- A woman is suing a local cardiologist for the wrongful death of her husband.

Roger L. Cook underwent a left heart catheterization in 1997 by Dr. Jashvantlal K. Thakkar at Charleston Area Medical Center, according to a complaint filed Dec. 9 in Kanawha Circuit Court.

After the catheterization, Cook underwent an urgent coronary artery bypass grafting times four procedure by another physician. Cook continued to follow up with Thakkar until his last appointment on April 5, 2007, where he was told he was doing fine and to follow up in one year.

On Sept. 7, 2007, Cook was found unconscious at his workplace and co-workers began performing CPR on him, according to the suit. He was transported to Boone Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cook's wife, Sandra Cook, claims Thakkar owed a duty to her husband to skillfully, prudently and thoroughly diagnose, care, treat, advise and observe him and therefore breached this duty.

Mrs. Cook is seeking compensatory damages for negligence and wrongful death. She is being represented by Lonnie C. Simmons and Heather Langeland of DiTrapano, Barrett & DiPiero.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Paul Zakaib Jr.
