CHARLESTON -- A woman is suing the West Virginia Division of Corrections, the West Virginia Department of Education and three individuals after she claims she was sexually harassed, assaulted and abused.
Melissa Coleman was incarcerated in Lakin Correctional Center from 2006 until 2008 and claims Standley Greene and Cliff Thomas were the men who sexually harassed, assaulted and abused her, according to a complaint filed Jan. 27 in Kanawha Circuit Court.
Greene was employed by the West Virginia Department of Education, which provided education within Lakin Correctional Center. Thomas was employed by the West Virginia Division of Corrections.
Coleman claims an unknown individual concealed Thomas' actions or facilitated his wrongful and actionable acts.
As a result of Greene and Thomas' acts, Coleman claims she suffered anxiety; humiliation; annoyance and inconvenience; invasion of privacy; emotional distress; pain and suffering; mental anguish; loss of her ability to enjoy life; future medical and pharmaceutical expenses; and other damages.
Coleman is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. She is being represented by Matthew J. Woelfel and Kerry A. Nessel.
The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Carrier Webster.
