CHARLESTON -- A Glasgow man is suing American Electric Power Company, Appalachian Power Company, American Electric Power Service Corporation, Martin Engineering Company, Brown Electric Group and Brown Electric Co. Inc. after a work-related injury caused him to have his fingers amputated.
Thomas L. Cooper was employed by Appalachian Power Company at its Kanawha River Power Plant as a coal equipment operator, according to a complaint filed Feb. 4 in Kanawha Circuit Court.
On June 20, 2008, Cooper claims he was performing his work duties in the bunker room at the plant when he suffered severe and permanent injuries because a tripper car of coal handling/management system ran over his right hand.
Cooper's fingers were amputated and he suffered other injuries to his arm, hand and palm, according to the suit.
Cooper claims the defendants failed to properly inspect for hazards and to properly maintain and service the coal handling system and its components.
Cooper is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. He is being represented by Patrick E. Maroney and Robert M. Williams of Maroney, Williams, Weaver & Pancake PLLC.
