Maynard has impact on Third District race, Cook Report says

Maynard

WILLIAMSON -- Shortly after he announced his candidacy for West Virginia's 3rd Congressional District seat, former state Supreme Court Justice Spike Maynard already is making an impact.

The nationally renowned political handicapper, The Cook Political Report, has revised its ranking of the race for Democrat Nick Rahall's seat. Once considered by Cook to be "Solid Democrat," is now in the competitive "Likely Democrat" category.

"The Nation knows West Virginia's 3rd District is now in play with the entry of a strong Republican primary candidate like Elliott 'Spike' Maynard," Maynard Campaign Manager Mik Carpenter said. "I hope Congressman Rahall sees, as West Virginians and national political pundits do, he is in for the race of his life."

The non-partisan Cook Political Report considers 300 of the 435 Congressional races in 2010 "safe" for either party.

Founded in 1984, The Cook Political Report is an independent, non-partisan newsletter that analyzes elections and campaigns for the US House of Representatives, US Senate, Governors and President as well as American political trends. In 2004, the report moved to an online-based publication.

Maynard is seeking the Republican nomination for the 3rd Congressional District of West Virginia.
