Greear says he enjoys public service

CHARLESTON -- Dan Greear believes being a judge is something every lawyer thinks about at some point in their lives.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Judge (Irene) Berger and really admired her," said Greear, who is running for Kanawha Circuit Judge this fall against Democrat Carrie Webster. "The circuit judges really make an impact on peoples' lives, and I think it's such an important position."

Greear, a South Charleston native who lives just a mile away from his childhood home, has been practicing law for almost 18 years and said he loves helping people.

"I enjoy public service and helping people in any way that I can," he said.

Greear, a former House of Delegates member and candidate for attorney general, said he has tried cases in most of the counties in West Virginia and not just representing one side.

"I've tried cases representing plaintiffs and defendants," Greear said. "I think that experience helps me to be able to look at a case from all angles and gives me a unique perspective."

If elected to the bench, Greear said it would be a new experience and great opportunity.

"It would be a change being on the other side of the bench," he said. "I would be able to experience new areas of law from the judge's perspective, and I think because I have the benefit from my experience representing both sides before a court, I would be able to look at cases from all angles and people could really benefit from that."

Greear said right now he is getting organized for campaigning and will be working very hard on his grassroots campaign.

"We'll be knocking on doors and going to community events," Greear said. "We'll be out and about the community campaigning."

Greear graduated from West Virginia University College of Law in 1992, where he was third in his class. He served in the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1995 and 1996 and is currently a partner with Kesner, Kesner & Bramble in Charleston. He is a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church, along with his wife and two sons, where he is a deacon, Sunday school teacher and youth leader.
