CHARLESTON -- A Jackson County woman is suing Simpson Dental Associates and a dentist for dental malpractice after she claims they were negligent in caring for her.
On Nov. 6, 2007, Bonnie Ford underwent bone replacement graft surgery by Dr. Mark W. Simpson in preparation for the placement of permanent dental implants, according to a complaint filed May 20 in Kanawha Circuit Court.
Ford claims Simpson failed to properly inquire as to her medication history, including her use of Fosamax.
On March 20, 2008, Ford underwent endosseous implant surgery and on Sept. 23, 2008, she underwent implant maintenance procedures by Simpson, according to the suit.
Ford claims Simpson concealed her injuries and complications up until and through October 2008, when she first discovered her condition was not improving and her bone and adjoining teeth had been compromised.
During the entire course of her treatment, Ford continued to have substantial dental pain, according to the suit.
Ford claims the defendants negligently performed the bone replacement graft surgery without obtaining her history of Fosamax use and her relevant medical history that directly impacted on the success of the bone replacement graft surgery; negligently placed two implants in close proximity, which caused a significant infection and the ultimate loss of the implant teeth; and negligently failed to use normal and reasonable dental care to successfully complete the implant maintenance procedures.
The defendants intentionally deceived and defrauded Ford by affirmatively refusing to advise her of her health risks, according to the suit.
Ford is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. She is being represented by David F. Nelson and Natalie C. Schaefer.
The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Charles King.
