Former inmate sues jail authority for sexual abuse, harassment

CHARLESTON -- A former inmate is suing the West Virginia Regional Jail Authority and four correctional officers after she claims she was sexually harassed and abused during her incarceration.

Rhonda Simpson was an inmate at the Southern Regional Jail and was sexually harassed and abused by Lonnie Newhouse, C.O. Manning, Christopher Dameron and John Doe during her incarceration, according to a complaint filed July 15 in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Simpson claims the correctional officers caused her to suffer severe emotional distress.

The WVRJA negligently failed to supervise the correctional officers; negligently retained their employment; negligently staffed the Southern Regional Jail; and negligently failed to intervene on Simpson's behalf, according to the sui.t

Simpson is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. She is being represented by Matthew J. Woelfel.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge James Stucky.
