CHARLESTON -- West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw, along with Gov. Joe Manchin, announced on Wednesday the start of the state's final Energy Star sales tax holiday.
The tax holiday starts Wednesday and continues through Nov. 30. During the holiday, residents will not have to pay sales and use tax on certain Energy Star-qualified products valued at $5,000 or less.
Manchin introduced the tax holiday legislation in 2008 with the state Legislature's support.
For its part, McGraw's office successfully litigated against two credit card companies on behalf of the state's consumers, thus supporting such consumer initiatives as the Energy Star program.
"I am happy that the work product of the Attorney General's office is being used to provide tax relief and contribute to energy conservation," McGraw said in a statement.
Manchin, in a statement Wednesday, said, "For the past two years, the Energy Star sales tax holiday has allowed our citizens to save money by purchasing energy efficient household appliances.
"Our citizens have realized energy savings from purchases made during the two previous tax holidays. I hope West Virginia families will continue to take steps to improve their household energy efficiency and our environment by participating one more time," the governor said.
In addition to the Energy Star sales tax holiday, consumers also can take advantage of the West Virginia Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program, which began in June and is being administered by the state Department of Environmental Protection.
