Former employee sues Sears, manager for wrongful termination

HUNTINGTON -- A former employee is suing Sears Holdings Corporation and its store manager after she claims her employment was wrongfully terminated because of her age.

Kathy Wakefield had been employed by Sears for 30 years at the time of her termination on Aug. 19, 2008, according to a complaint filed Aug. 19 in Cabell Circuit Court.

Wakefield claims she had worked for 29 years without any performance issues or any written reports for any problems with her performance, attendance or anything else.

Bill Hagy became the store manager after Wakefield had been employed at Sears for 29 years and terminated her employment after one write-up, according to the suit.

Wakefield claims the defendants terminated her employment because of her age.

Wakefield is seeking compensatory damages with pre- and post-judgment interest. She is being represented by R. Stephen Jarrell.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge F. Jane Hustead.
