TV judge to preside over family issues forum in Charleston

Reynolds

CHARLESTON -– The number of judges in West Virginia will temporary increase by one when a former Georgia judge turned court-themed television personality will hold court on Saturday to hear testimony about family issues in the capital city.

The Tuesday Morning Group, a faith-based community revitalization organization based on Charleston's west side, is the sponsor of "An Open Court Community Forum on Family Issues" on Saturday, Sept. 18 at First Baptist Church on Shrewsbury Street.

The forum will be conducted like a trial in which testimony will be offered on how issues such as domestic violence, juvenile delinquency, and access to health care and education affect not only the community generally, but the African-American community specifically.

Presiding over the matter will be Judge Penny Brown Reynolds, a former Georgia State Court judge. Currently, Reynolds is host of the daytime television show "Family Court with Judge Penny."

Prior to appointment to the bench, Reynolds served as an assistant attorney general, and later as executive counsel to then-Gov. Roy Barnes. Since then, Reynolds received a Masters in Theology from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, and serves as an associate minister at the Midway Missionary Baptist Church in College Park, Ga., where her husband, Rev. Edward S. Reynolds, is pastor.

Among those scheduled to make a presentation during the forum are Rev. Matthew Watts, pastor of Grace Baptist Church, on community and economic development, Dr. Dan Foster (D-Kanawha) on health care, Rev. Katherine Reed, chaplain at St. Francis Hospital, on domestic violence and Kanawha Circuit Judge Carrie Webster on juvenile issues. After Reynolds gives her response to the presentations, she will answer questions from the audience.

The forum, which begins at 1 p.m., is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served prior to, and after the event.
