Final Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday nearing an end

CHARLESTON -- West Virginia taxpayers have until the end of the month to take advantage of the state's third and final Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday.

As part of the tax break, which wraps up Nov. 30, residents do not pay sales and use tax on qualified Energy Star products valued at $5,000 or less. Tangible personal property for use in a trade or business is not subject to the sales tax holiday.

"I am so pleased that we've been able to offer this sales tax holiday for three years now," Gov. Joe Manchin said in a statement Monday.

"I encourage all West Virginians to take stock of what their home may need. From a small item to a large home improvement need, do your research and see what Energy Star option may be available and take advantage of it before the end of the month."

Manchin introduced the tax holiday legislation in 2008 with the state Legislature's support.

For its part, West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw has successfully litigated against two credit card companies on behalf of the state's consumers, thus supporting such consumer initiatives as the Energy Star program.

"I am happy that the work product of the Attorney General's office is being used to provide tax relief and contribute to energy conservation," McGraw said in a statement.

In addition to the sales tax holiday, the West Virginia Appliance Rebate Program still has rebates available for dishwashers, clothes washers and refrigerators.

All West Virginia retailers that sell Energy Star qualified products have been asked to display a sign in their windows, on their doors or in their aisles, noting their participation.

Purchases that qualify for the tax holiday must have the Energy Star label, cost $5,000 or less, and is for noncommercial home or personal use.
