Mason Co. woman sues St. Mary's for father's death

HUNTINGTON -- A Mason County woman is suing St. Mary's Medical Center after she claims it is responsible for her father's death.

Cornerstone Hospital of Huntington was also named as a defendant in the suit.

On Dec. 2, 2008, Jack Kerwood Sr. was admitted to St. Mary's Medical Center for treatment of acute pancreatitis, renal insufficiency, cholelithiasis and leukocytosis, according to a complaint filed Dec. 10 in Cabell Circuit Court.

His daughter, Jody Jones, claims he suffered a skin break down and pressure ulcers during his admission and the hospital failed to provide adequate care plans for the issues.

On Dec. 17, 2008, Kerwood was transferred to Cornerstone to receive additional healthcare services, but the pressure ulcers worsened and became infected, according to the suit.

Jones claims the defendants' negligence led to her father's death on April 27, 2009.

Jones is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. She is being represented by Andrew L. Paternostro and Jeff D. Stewart.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge F. Jane Hustead.
