HUNTINGTON – The Appalachian Institute for Digital Evidence held its winter conference Feb. 17-18 at the Marshall University Forensics Center.
There were about 60 people in attendance at the conference. Of those, 12 were attorneys in West Virginia.
Jill McIntyre, an attorney at Jackson Kelly in Charleston, was in charge of the electronic discovery portion of the conference.
"Our mission is to make sure people in all four disciplines are able to communicate about digital evidence because it is all coming from different places," McIntyre said. "Evidence is becoming more and more digital and businesses are moving from paper to computers, so everything is going digital."
John Sammons, the founder and director of AIDE and an assistant professor in the Department of Integrated Science and Technology at Marshall University, said the conference's goal was to help professionals and students keep up with both technology and the law.
"When it comes to technology and the law, it is always evolving and you need to always continue to learn," Sammons said.
Sammons said the conference had speakers from across the country, including an author in the Information Security field named Jayson Street, who wrote the book "Dissecting the Hack: The Forbidden Network."
Other electronic discovery speakers at the conference included Robert F. Duncan, who manages the Lexington, Ky., Jackson Kelly office; Emily M. Renzelli, a University of Virginia School of Law student and Bridgeport native; and J. Eric Whytsell, who manages the Washington, D.C., Jackson Kelly office.
McIntyre said there were presentations in all four disciplines, which are digital evidence, information security, law enforcement and electronic discovery.
McIntyre said AIDE is currently planning its second annual conference for later this year.
