Obama nominates Berkeley judge for federal judiciary

Groh

MARTINSBURG – President Barack Obama has nominated a West Virginia circuit judge for the state's federal bench.

Berkeley Circuit Judge Gina Marie Groh was nominated by the president on May 19 to West Virginia's northern U.S. District Court.

Groh was an assistant county prosecutor when Sen. Joe Manchin, then governor, appointed her to the circuit judgeship in 2006. Manchin and fellow Democrat Sen. Jay Rockefeller recommended Groh to Obama in March.

Groh has been nominated to fill the vacancy left by the 2006 death of Judge Craig Broadwater.

Congress recently voted to name the federal building and courthouse in Martinsburg after Broadwater.

The U.S. Senate must now consider Groh. Former state Democratic Chairman Nick Case was recommended for the Broadwater vacancy in 2009, but the president did not nominate him.
