Woman sues Wexford Health Resources, physician for sexual misconduct

HUNTINGTON -- A former Lakin Correction Center inmate is suing Wexford Health Resources and a physician it employed after she claims she was sexually harassed and sexually abused.

Dr. John Pellegrini and John Doe were also named as defendants in the suit.

Monique Nicole Weldon was incarcerated at Lakin Correctional Center in Mason County and was being treated by Pellegrini when she was sexually harassed and abused by him, according to a complaint filed June 21 in Cabell Circuit Court.

Weldon claims Wexford Health Resources negligently allowed Pellegrini's conduct to occur.

Wexford owed a duty to Weldon to exercise reasonable care with repsect to hiring, retention and supervision of Pellegrini and see that patients were not subjected to sexual abuse, sexual harassment or other inappropriate conduct while undergoing medical treatment, according to the suit.

Weldon claims Pellegrini conducted himself in a similar fashion with other patients.

The defendants' actions caused Weldon to suffer severe emotional distress, according to the suit.

Weldon is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. She is being represented by Kerry A. Nessel.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge F. Jane Hustead.
