Woman sues nursing home for mother's death

CHARLESTON -- A Kanawha County woman is suing HR of Charleston after she claims it is responsible for his mother's death.

Genesis Healthcare Corporation; and John Does 1 through 10 were also named as defendants in the suit.

Loretta Conner was admitted to HR of Charleston, which is doing business as Oak Ridge Center, on March 30, 2010, at the age of 78, according to a complaint filed Dec. 7 in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Denise Stricklen claims Conner fell on April 11, 2010, while at the center and had to be taken to the Intensive Care Unit at Charleston Area Medical Center, where she remained until April 15, 2010, when she was taken back to Oak Ridge.

On May 13, 2010, Conner died from a subdural hematoma caused by the fall, according to the suit.

Stricklen claims the defendants failed to properly treat Conner and failed to respond to significant signs and symptoms of change in her condition.

The defendants' actions caused Conner extreme pail, suffering, mental anguish, embarrassment, terror and death, according to the suit.

Stricklen is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. She is being represented by Shawn P. George.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Louis H. Bloom.
