CHARLESTON -- A Coral Springs, Fla. woman is suing Embassy Suites after she was injured at the hotel.
John Q. Hammons Hotels, Inc. is doing business as Embassy Suites.
On June 17, 2011, Victoria Butrus was a guest staying in the Embassy Suites Hotel in Charleston when she slipped and fell in the atrium due to puddles of water on the floor, according to a complaint filed June 6 in Kanawha Circuit Court.
Butrus claims the defendant owed a duty of care to its guests and was negligent in maintaining an area in the atrium of the hotel.
The defendant allowed the walkway area to be poorly maintained as to leaving puddles of water without the display of any type of caution sign or visual warning in an area frequently used by guests, according to the suit.
Butrus claims the defendant knew or should have known that the busy common area of the hotel could become dangerous due to the close proximity of the swimming pool and eating areas and failed to keep the area safe for its guests.
Embassy Suites' actions caused Butrus to be transported by EMS to St. Francis Hospital with severe low back pain after she fell in the atrium, according to the suit.
Butrus is seeking compensatory damages with pre- and post-judgment interest. She is being represented by Susan J. Van Zant.
The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Paul Zakaib Jr.
