CHARLESTON – A man is suing Thomas Health System, Inc., after he claims it failed to timely recognized and treat a myocardial infarction.
Herbert J. Thomas Memorial Hospital, Dr. James Young and Dr. Hossam Tarakji were also named as defendants in the suit.
On Dec. 19, 2010, Ronald D. Bowe II presented to the emergency room at Thomas Memorial with chest pain, according to a complaint filed Dec. 21 in Kanawha Circuit Court.
Bowe claims an EKG was performed at approximately 8 a.m., which was abnormal and revealed deep inverted T waves anteriolaterally in leads I, L and V1-V4 and also revealed an ST elevation anteriorly in V1 and V2 reflecting myocardial injury.
Following the EKG, Bowe continued to report his pain level as 10/10 and at approximately 9:11 a.m., a repeat EKG was performed, which also showed to be abnormal and demonstrated ongoing changes reflecting a progressive process of injury, specifically the flipping of the anteriolateral T waves and V1, V2 ST wave elevation, according to the suit.
Bowe claims at approximately 6:44 p.m., a third EKG was performed and again was abnormal and showed is injury progressing.
The first EKG performed on Bowe was abnormal and should have alerted the defendants to an evolving myocardial infarction, according to the suit, and additional EKG’s further support the ongoing injury occurring to Bowe’s heart muscle.
Bowe claims he continued to experience chest pain and was ultimately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.
Due to the defendants’ failures and/or refusals to property diagnose, monitor and treat Bowe by failing to recognize and/or diagnose the existence of a myocardial infarction, the evaluation and treatment of the myocardial infarction, Bowe suffered permanent damage to his heart, according to the suit.
Bowe claims the defendants were negligent in their care and have caused him to suffer permanent bodily injuries, mental anguish, medical and related expenses and loss of income.
All of the injuries Bowe sustained were a direct and proximate result of the negligent actions of the defendants, according to the suit.
Bowe is seeking compensatory damages. He is being represented by Ray M. Shepard.
The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Charles E. King.
