Women sue Dunbar Care for nursing home negligence

Mani

CHARLESTON – Two women are suing Sunbridge Dunbar Healthcare Corp. for allegedly negligently caring for their family member while she was a resident of its nursing home.

Sunbridge Dunbar Healthcare Corp. is doing business as Dunbar Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Sunbridge Healthcare, LLC, Sun Healthcare Group, Inc., and Drema Thompson were also named as defendants in the suit.

Julia Goines was a long-term nursing home resident of the defendants from Feb. 13, until April 9, according to a complaint filed Jan. 17 in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Rebecca Lawton and Linda Rose Truesdale claim during her residency, Goines suffered pressure ulcers and dehydration.

The defendants failed to monitor Goines’ intake of fluids over the course of days to weeks, resulting in severe dehydration and failed to notify her physician of significant changes in her condition, including infection; declining level of cognitive and alertness; and severe dehydration, according to the suit.

The plaintiffs claim Goines was ultimately transferred to Thomas Memorial Hospital, where she underwent extensive treatment for the injuries she sustained at the defendant’s nursing home.

The defendants breached the applicable standard of care owed to Goines by a pattern of poor care, neglect and abuse rendered by staff and by failing to protect Goines from foreseeable harm, according to the suit.

Lawton and Truesdale are seeking compensatory and punitive damages. They are being represented by Jonathan R. Mani.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Charles E. King.
