West Virginia Record headline shown on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

CHARLESTON – The West Virginia Record made an appearance on the July 8 broadcast of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Leno displayed the June 17 edition of the legal journal during his weekly “Headlines” segment, during which he displays newspaper items from around the country that he finds humorous.

“I like this headline,” Leno remarked as he showed a copy of the West Virginia Record with the banner headline “Marshall University dismissed from bottle-rocket-shot-out-of-anus lawsuit.”

After he and the crowd stopped laughing, Leno said, “That pretty much tells you everything you need to know right there, doesn’t it? I mean, do I need to read the story now?”

The article was written by Kyla Asbury and reports on a motion to dismiss that was recently granted in favor of Marshall University in a lawsuit filed by Louis Helmburg III.

In the lawsuit, a partygoer at a fraternity house is accused of firing a bottle rocket out of his anus, causing Helmburg to be startled and fall off a deck.

Also named as defendants are Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity Inc. of Huntington, Richmond Property Group LTd. and Travis Hughes.

The West Virginia Record thanks the reader who submitted the headline to The Tonight Show.

The segment can be viewed at NBC.com.
