BRIDGEPORT - The Energy & Mineral Law Foundation (EMLF) recently honored Steptoe & Johnson PLLC Member, C. David Morrison with the 2013 John L. McClaugherty Award for distinguished service to the legal profession, the natural resources industry, and the EMLF.

Morrison received the award at EMLF’s 34th Annual Institute held in Baltimore on June 16-18. He becomes the third attorney from Steptoe & Johnson to receive this honor. Russell L. Schetroma and R. Neal Pierce also received the award in 2007 and 2004, respectively.

Morrison was selected as the recipient of the McClaugherty Award in recognition of his years of service to the EMLF and his contributions to the organization’s programs. He has been a lifelong member of EMLF and has served in a number of leadership roles in the organization, including a term as President from 2009-2010. Currently, he is the chair of the Kentucky Mineral Law Conference, scheduled for October 23-25 in Lexington, Ky.

The John L. McClaugherty Award was established by the Foundation in 2003 to honor the memory of John L. McClaugherty, partner in the Charleston law firm of Jackson Kelly PLLC. John was a past president of the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation, friend, colleague, philanthropist, and mentor to many young attorneys, fostering their interest in mineral law and encouraging their support of the Foundation’s programs and projects. The McClaugherty Award honors an EMLF member who exemplifies a continuing involvement and commitment to EMLF, the legal profession, and the natural resources industry.

Morrison focuses his practice in the area of labor and employment and has over 30 years of experience in employment counseling, including supervisory training. He has tried over 80 cases and arbitrations, and has argued over 20 appeals before state and federal appeals courts. He received his B.A. from Transylvania University and his J.D. from the University of Kentucky.

The EMLF is a nonprofit educational organization based in Lexington, Kentucky that provides educational programs on legal issues related to energy and natural resources, publishes scholarly research, and provides scholarship assistance to law students.
