Toll booth worker says state agency discriminated against her

CHARLESTON - A former employee is suing the West Virginia Parkways Economic Development and Tourism Authority after she claims she was discriminated against.

Rebecca L. Coon was employed at the defendant's Chelyan Toll Booth Office from Jan. 1, 1985, until Feb. 5, according to a complaint filed June 24 in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Coon claims she has been classified as handicapped by the defendant since 2006 and she claims the defendant discriminated against her because of her disability.

The defendant's actions were also done so in discrimination of Coon's age, according to the suit.

Coon claims as a result of the defendant's discrimination and retaliation against her, the defendant violated the West Virginia Human Rights Act.

As a direct result of the willful and intentional acts of the defendant, Coon is entitled to back pay and an award for emotional distress, embarrassment and mental anguish.

Coon is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. She is being represented by J. Michael Ranson and Cynthia M. Ranson of Ranson Law Offices.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge James C. Stucky.
