Lawsuit: Surgical mistake perforated bowel

WHEELING - A Brooke County woman is suing a United States agency over claims a federally employed doctor caused life-changing injuries during surgery.

Stacey Klepack filed a lawsuit on Sept. 4 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, citing negligence and medical malpractice.

The plaintiff says the defendant's employee, Dr. Kara O'Karma, was negligent and caused severe injury to the plaintiff's bowel during surgery to remove an ovarian cyst on Feb. 23, 2010.

The plaintiff suffered severe pain and suffering and had to undergo subsequent surgery to address the problem, according to the brief.

Klepack is being represented by Wellsburg attorney David F. Cross.

The claim form she submitted on Sept. 13, 2012, sought $293,347.98.
