Wrongful termination suit filed against water company

Goldner

CHARLESTON - A Fayette County woman is suing her former employer over claims she was fired because of her dependent's high medical costs and because she knew the company was overcharging customers.

Valerie Vaughn filed a lawsuit on Sept. 16 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia against West Virginia-American Water Co., citing discrimination, retaliation and wrongful termination.

The plaintiff, whose daughter has a history of significant medical conditions, claims her position at the defendant's Oak Hill office was terminated because of the insurance costs associated with her daughter and because Vaughn had noticed and questioned a faulty water meter reading system that caused errors and inaccurate customer billing, according to the brief.

She is seeking an undetermined amount of relief, including lost wages.

Vaughn is being represented by Charleston attorney Mark Goldner.
