BECKLEY – The insurer for a Beckley church has agreed to pay the family of a minor who suffered a concussion $10,000.
On Sept. 11, Amanda Meadows filed a petition for the approval of a settlement reached by her, as mother of Isaac Meadows, and Cincinnati Insurance Company, the insurer of United Methodist Temple in Beckley.
Raleigh County Circuit Court Judge John A. Hutchinson must approve the settlement.
The petition says Isaac was playing with other children at the preschool/daycare operated at UMT on Oct. 7, 2011. Isaac was four years old at the time.
Employees of UMT allowed older children to ride bicycles in a room near younger children, and Isaac fell when another child rode a bicycle in front of him, the petition says.
Isaac suffered a concussion, vomiting, congestion and sinusitis, as well as incurring medical bills of $6,558.46, the petition says.
His health insurer, Public Employees Insurance Agent, paid only $988.44 of his bills.
From the $10,000 settlement, $2,500 will be paid to the Law Office of Stephen P. New in Beckley.
Court costs, PEIA’s lien on funds to cover what it paid and $99.42 will also be taken out of the settlement, leaving the Meadowses with $6,052.41 to pay the remaining $5,470.62 in medical bills.
UMT denied liability for the accident.
