CHARLESTON – An attorney and current House member is running for state Auditor.

Republican John McCuskey formally announced his campaign Tuesday. He currently represents the 35th House District and is an attorney at Steptoe & Johnson.

"I am running for state auditor because I want to continue to get West Virginia moving forward," McCuskey said in his announcement. "Too often, our state government forgets that every penny it spends comes from the hard working taxpayers.

"It is my priority to protect the taxpayers hard earned dollars and ensure that it is being spent wisely. The people of West Virginia deserve a smaller, more efficient government that is both transparent and accountable. I hope to make the people of West Virginia proud by doing just that."

McCuskey was elected to the House in 2012. At Steptoe & Johnson, he practices in the Energy Litigation Group.

"I will run an organized and aggressive campaign, keeping the people of West Virginia and their needs as my main priorities," he said. "This election is an opportunity to build a strong ticket that supports a more efficient government that puts West Virginia on the right track.

"It is an honor to be running alongside Senate President Bill Cole, a truly outstanding leader for West Virginia. I look forward to working with him as the Governor of our great state."

McCuskey was raised in Charleston. He graduated from The George Washington University where he graduated with a degree in Political Communication. Before attending and graduating from the West Virginia University College of Law, he worked as a civilian for the Department of Defense at The Pentagon in the offices of the Army and DOD General Counsels. He resides in Charleston with his wife and daughter.
