Tanning bed customer blames shop for alleged burns

Tanning bed

WHEELING — A Wheeling woman says she was burned in a tanning bed in 2014, allegedly due to the operator’s negligence.

Cathy Sutphin filed a lawsuit Feb. 10 in Ohio Circuit Court against Tiffany’s LLC, doing business as Coffee & Tanning, and John Doe Co., a tanning bed distributor in an unknown location, alleging negligence and product liability.

According to the complaint, during Sutphin’s Feb. 10, 2014, visit to Coffee & Tanning, she suffered painful burns to her face, neck, chest and other areas. The suit blames the injuries on a defective product sold by distributor John Doe Co. and on a lack of inspection by Tiffany’s LLC to ensure the equipment was functioning properly.

Sutphin seeks a jury trial and compensatory damages for pain and suffering, medical bills, lost wages and lost earning capacity, plus litigation costs. She is represented by attorney Ronald W. Zavolta and Jordan M. Laird of the Zavolta Law Office in Wheeling.

Judge David J. Sims is assigned to the case.
