Tanning bed customer blames manufacturer, store for burns

Hand burn

WHEELING — A woman from Ohio is suing Heartland Tanning and Coffee & Tanning Hot Spot II over alleged burns she suffered in the store’s tanning beds.

Mallory Tipton filed a lawsuit Feb. 8 in Ohio Circuit Court against Heartland Tanning Inc.; Tiffany’s LLC, doing business as Coffee & Tanning Hot Spot II; and the unnamed manufacturer, distributor and wholesaler of the store’s tanning beds, alleging negligence and product liability.

According to the complaint, Tipton suffered serious burns while in a Heartland Tanning Inc. tanning bed on Feb. 10, 2014. The suit alleges manufacture and sale of a defective product, and claims that Tiffany’s LLC neglected to inspect and maintain proper functioning of the unit. As a result, Tipton claims she suffered first- and second-degree burns to her face, head, shoulder and arm, with accompanying swelling, bruising and blistering.

Tipton seeks a jury trial and punitive and compensatory damages in an amount to be determined at trial. She is represented by attorney David P. Robinson of Robinson Law Offices in Wheeling.

Judge David J. Sims is assigned to the case.
