Mother blames school officials for son’s hand injury

CHARLESTON – A Kanawha County woman is suing the county school board over injuries her son allegedly suffered while at school.

Alisha Peoples, parent and next friend of Norlander Alden Dean Jr., filed a lawsuit March 18 in Kanawha Circuit Court against the Kanawha County Board of Education, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, Norlander Dean cut his hand on a faulty water fountain at Horace Mann Middle School on March 21, 2014. The suit says the danger was not readily apparent to the child, but the school should have ensured the water fountains were in working order and safe for student use. The child’s injuries required medical care that is ongoing, the plaintiff says.

Peoples seeks compensatory damages for medical costs and litigation costs. She is represented by attorney Scott H. Kaminski of Balgo & Kaminski L.C. of Charleston.

Judge Carrie L. Webster is assigned to the case.
