FAYETTEVILLE — A patient is suing David F. Meriwether, M.D., a surgeon, alleging negligence in health care.
Tony L. Coffman filed a complaint on June 22 in Fayette Circuit Court against Meriwether, alleging that the surgeon failed to exercise the degree of care, skill and learning required of a reasonably prudent surgeon.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that, in June 2015, he was suffering from chronic renal failure. After undergoing surgery with another physician, it was discovered that the material removed during the surgery included two light green cylindrical plastic fragments which had been left by the defendant during an earlier procedure. The defendant's actions allegedly caused the plaintiff to suffer additional additional surgeries and expenses and the eventual loss of his left kidney. The plaintiff holds Meriwether responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to provide necessary information about his specific condition and failed to obtain an imaging study which would have revealed the obstruction after a stent removal.
The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against the defendant in an amount to be determined by jury, pre- and post-judgment interest, court costs, attorneys' fees and such other relief as the court deems appropriate. He is represented by Erwin L. Conrad and Jamison T. Conrad of Conrad & Conrad PLLC in Fayetteville.
