Carol Casto, who was former U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin's top assistant, has overseen the office since Goodwin resigned in December to run for governor.
On July 29, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch appointed Casto to become interim U.S. attorney for 120 days. That will remain in effect unless President Barack Obama makes an appointment first. But that likely won't happen because Obama is near the end of his term.
After the 120 days, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District can appoint a U.S. Attorney until the vacancy is filled by the president.
Sen. Joe Manchin has recommended that Obama nominate Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Ruby to the post. Regardless of which president nominates a replacement for Goodwin, the U.S. Senate will have to confirm the nominee.
