J.A.D.E. Business Concepts Inc. is doing business as Fantastic Sam’s.
On April 4, 2014, Shykara Garrett began working in Fantastic Sam’s Huntington salon and, soon after, Linda Eddy began to issue write ups to Garrett, according to a complaint filed June 23 in Cabell Circuit Court.
Garrett claims she contested the write ups and when the salon manager who had hired Garrett learned of Eddy’s excessive write ups, the unwarranted disciplinary action against her briefly stopped.
Following a write up in which Eddy accused Garrett of putting her name on tickets that did not belong to her, the salon manager commented to Garrett that Eddy was intimidated by her because she was a “young strong black woman.”
Garrett claims in the fall of 2014, she was promoted to “3rd Assistant Manager” based on her performance in the court of her employment and, several months later, in the spring of 2015, the salon manager who hired Garrett resigned from her employment.
Eddy then became the salon manager and within one month of her promotion, she terminated Garrett’s employment based on the false claim that she took products from the salon to style a customer’s hair outside of the salon.
Garrett claims she denies ever removing anything from the salon that did not belong to her personally, but she did schedule an appointment with a long-time client of hers outside of work hours because the style and/or process her client requested was not permitted to be performed in the Huntington location.
As a result of the defendant’s disciplinary actions, the plaintiff has suffered damages and was discriminated against because of her race and in retaliation for complaining about Eddy’s actions, according to the suit.
Garrett is seeking compensatory damages. She is being represented by Hoyt Glazer of the Law Office of Hoyt Glazer.
The case is assigned to Circuit Judge Paul T. Farrell.
