MARTINSBURG – A woman is suing Maryland Health Care System after she claims it said she owed money that she did not.

Marnie M. Estey claims Maryland Health Care System Veterans Affairs Medical Center 572 said she owed an unpaid medical bill, according to a complaint filed Sept. 9 in Jefferson Circuit Court and removed to federal court on Oct. 4.

Estey claims the medical bill had actually been paid in full by her insurance through VAMC Martinsburg and that she did not owe anything to the defendant.

The defendant accepted the insurance payment as paid in full under the Medicare/Medicaid ruling, but her credit was still blemished and damaged her tax payer’s identification, according to the suit.

Estey is seeking compensatory and punitive damages in the amount of $10,000. She is representing herself.

The defendant is represented by Eric Carter Tison and William J. Ihlenfeld II of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia case number: 3:16-cv-00140
