Couple blames school board for son's injuries

POINT PLEASANT — A Mason County husband and wife are suing the local school board, alleging its negligence caused the plaintiffs' daughter to be injured.

Richard Short and Carrie Short, as parents and natural guardians of Lindsey Short, a minor, filed a complaint March 20 in Mason Circuit Court against the Mason County Board of Education, alleging the board breached its duty to provide a safe environment for its students.

According to the complaint, on Sept. 9, 2014, 8-year-old Lindsey Short was participating in school activities at Point Pleasant Intermediate School when she was severely injured. The suit says her parents were caused to incur in excess of $100,000 for the care and treatment of Lindsey's injuries, which are permanent in nature.

The plaintiffs allege the Mason County school board failed to properly manage, maintain and supervise the school's facility and the students enrolled therein.

The Shorts seek trial by jury, damages in excess of the minimum jurisdictional limits of the court, plus interest and costs of court. They are represented by attorney Bruce L. Freeman of Freeman & Chiartas in Charleston.
