WILLIAMSON — A tenant is suing the owner of a Williamson apartment building, alleging housing discrimination.

Alexis Chafin filed a complaint April 24 in Mingo Circuit Court against NDC Real Estate Inc. alleging violation of the West Virginia Human Rights Act and West Virginia Fair Housing Act.

According to the complaint, Chafin, who suffers from epilepsy, was subjected to verbal abuse, threats, and unfair treatment by her landlord and another tenant in NDC's Williamson Towers apartment building.

Chafin says fears for her safety resulted in her filing for a personal safety order (PSO) but caused her to be verbally evicted in the apartment building due to alleged violation of her lease.

As a result, Chafin says she suffered emotional distress and humiliation.

The plaintiff alleges NDC Real Estate failed to provide tenants a safe place to live in, failed to secure premises to avoid dangerous conditions that can harm tenants and conducted a threatening eviction as retaliation due to the tenant's exercise of a right incidental to the tenancy.

Chafin seeks trial by jury, damages to be determined by the jury, attorney fees, court costs, and all just and equitable relief. She is represented by attorney Steven S. Wolfe of Wolfe, White and Associates in Logan.
