MARTINSBURG –A Jefferson County attorney has been nominated to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia.
President Donald Trump made the nomination last week for Bill Powell, who currently works in the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s office.
Powell previously was a managing member of Jackson Kelly in Martinsburg.
Jefferson County Prosecutor Matt Harvey told Metro News that Powell is the right man for the job, and will bring a lot of benefit to the Eastern Panhandle.
Powell served as Assistant United States District Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia, in the Criminal Division, prosecuting fraud and violent crime cases.
U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito recommended Powell’s nomination to Trump earlier this year.
“Bill Powell is uniquely qualified to serve as the next U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of West Virginia,” Capito said. “He has dedicated his legal career to serving West Virginians, including in his role as a federal prosecutor, and will do the same in this new role. Following his confirmation, I look forward to partnering with him to combat our state’s drug epidemic and uphold the law.”
