WILLIAMSON – A parent alleges that her daughter is being discriminated against by a school board because of her disabilities.
Lesa Compton, as parent, guardian, and next friend of LaRandi G. Compton, filed a complaint Sept. 1 in Mingo Circuit Court against Mingo County Board of Education citing the Americans with Disabilities Act.
According to the complaint, LaRandi G. Compton is a minor child that suffers from a physical handicap and is a third-grade student at Gilbert Elementary. The plaintiffs allege that the elevator is not fully functional at the school for her to reach her upstairs classroom and that the school has no playground equipment for handicapped persons.
The plaintiff holds Mingo County Board of Education responsible because elementary school allegedly is not fully handicap accessible.
The plaintiff seeks damages, injunction, punitive damages, interest, all legal fees and any other relief as the court deems just. They are represented by Justin J. Marcum of Marcum Law Office PLLC in Williamson. The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Miki J. Thompson.
