Morrisey supports Trump’s end to Obamacare subsidy payments

CHARLESTON — West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is hailing President Trump’s decision to immediately halt Obamacare subsidy payments to insurers.

Morrisey calls it another victory in West Virginia’s fight against federal overreach, and he said the decision reinforces his argument that cost-sharing reduction payments to insurance companies, paid as part of the Affordable Care Act, were unlawful as the action spent public monies not approved by Congress.

“I applaud President Trump’s decision to end these unlawful payments,” Morrisey said. “His decision is consistent with the rule of law. President Trump accurately recognizes that he cannot spend money without Congressional approval. The Affordable Care Act unmistakably allocates money for premium tax credits, but not reimbursements to insurers.

“I’m proud to have stood with the U.S. House of Representatives in pushing back against this unlawful Obama-era tactic."

Morrisey's office led a six-state coalition in successfully supporting a lawsuit brought by the U.S. House of Representatives.
