BECKLEY — A teacher is suing the Raleigh County school board, alleging intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Joyce Clarke of Beckley filed a complaint Feb. 27 in Raleigh Circuit Court against the Raleigh County Board of Education, alleging violation of the Safe Schools Act.
According to the complaint,during several incidents in 2015 and 2016, a student attacked and assaulted Clarke by throwing chairs and books at her and by striking, kicking and stomping on her. As a result, Clarke says, she suffered post-traumatic syndrome, mental and emotional distress, fear and anxiety.
The plaintiff alleges the Raleigh County Board of Education required her to work with a student who had a severe behavior issues, failed to take corrective actions and refused to expel the student.
Clarke seeks trial by jury, compensatory damages, attorney fees, court costs and all other appropriate relief. She is represented by attorneys Mark W. Carbone and Jeffrey G. Blaydes of Carbone & Blaydes PLLC in Charleston.
