Daughter blames Raleigh General Hospital for mother's death

Medical malpractice 07

BECKLEY — An estate administrator is suing Raleigh General Hospital LLC, claiming insufficient measures were taken by hospital personnel to prevent her mother's injuries.

Sandra Ryder, administratrix of the estate of Dorothy Hanshew, who died on Nov. 16, 2016, filed a complaint April 30 in Raleigh Circuit Court, alleging that Raleigh General Hospital negligently deviated from the standards of care in preventing Hanshew's pressure wound.

According to the complaint, Hanshew was admitted to Raleigh General on Oct. 2, 2016 with symptoms of a urinary tract infection. As a result of the defendant's alleged negligence, Ryder said Hanshew developed an unstageable pressure wound, which progressed to a stage 4 wound.

Ryder said Hanshew died on Nov. 12, 2106 from renal failure and an infection allegedly caused by her pressure wound.

The plaintiff claims Raleigh General Hospital LLC is responsible for Hanshew's death because it failed to hire, train and retain competent hospital staff and failed to recognize, prevent and timely treat the decedent's pressure ulcer.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks all damages allowed under the factual circumstances of this case. She is represented by Tammy Bowles Raines of Tammy Bowles Raines Law office PLLC in Charleston.
